I have another three and a half hours of work but I’m falling asleep. Then I will magically come alive at night when I’m meant to be asleep. The 5am wakeup is going to be a shock to the system.

I have spent $964.60 on coffees this year. As they’ve crept up from $3 to $4 to $5.30 over the last decade or so, I haven’t noticed the difference it makes to overall finances.

If I had a club membership at the cafe where coffees were free, but membership cost $1k, I wouldn’t take that up. Yet, it amounts to the same thing.

The road to poverty is paved with lots of little expenses that don’t seem too significant, but which add up to a lot.

At the same time we are not used to seeing the yearly totals of what we spend, so quite resonable spending can be perceived differently when looked at that way. Your brain is anchored to around $5 being a reasonable price for coffee, seeing $1K attached to the spending just feels wrong.

Sometimes going further and looking at the amount over years can have the opposite effect as you start comparing it to other big things - cut out coffee for 10 years and you could save $10K . So cutting coffee is not going to get you a house deposit, or a new car - it might get you one holiday, which you will deperately need after 10 years without coffee.

As vices go, it’s cheaper than alcohol or cigarettes - and less likely to kill me. I wouldn’t call myself addicted to caffeine, but all evidence points to that declaration being suspect. I will say that I’ve had occasion to go without caffeine for a few days more than once and have never had the headaches people report from missing out on their coffee. Sadly, I also never get the ‘energy boost’ people are supposed to get from coffee.

I’m absolutely addicted to caffeine. But if that was the only reason you were getting it you would be happy with any caffeine containing substitute, which is most likely not the case.

I think with things like coffee there are a lot of factors that go into why we want it. Caffeine and taste are the obvious ones, but there is also things like taking a break from work, the chance to walk away from your desk for a bit (maybe even outside, depending on your location), sometimes a social aspect if you chat with the barrista or people in the queue. Even just being able to pick up and drink for a micro-break from your work without feeling like you are doing nothing while your brain processes something can be important.

Once you add all of those things in buying coffee starts to look like a better deal (which is probably why so many people resist the idea of cutting it out to save money) but it can also help you to think of other ways to meet the needs it is fulfulling if you do want to cut it out.

Random memory: During the time Melbcat needed a lot of trips to emergency and before I had any help or the pram, a taxi driver refused to let her carrier in the car and demanded that she go in the boot. I can tell you that did not happen. I argued with the driver until he refused to take us, called another ride and then boycotted the taxi company.

This was for reasons of not wanting to put her in a dark claustrophobic airless space by herself, and separated from me. (There’s no reason the driver would have taken off with her but I didn’t want to even make that possible.) Also if the vehicle got hit from behind she would have been severely injured or killed. It was unsafe.

And now I see that what he was trying to push me into was illegal.

    1. Transport Minimum standards

Adequate ventilation must be provided in the vehicle and travelling container or cage.

    And

Travelling containers must be secured or restrained in the vehicle. Cats must not be transported in the boot of a car.

    https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/livestock-and-animals/animal-welfare-victoria/pocta-act-1986/victorian-codes-of-practice-for-animal-welfare/code-of-practice-for-the-private-keeping-of-cats#%3A~%3Atext=Travelling+containers+must+not+have%2Cthe+boot+of+a+car.

Fuck that guy. My instincts were correct and even in a difficult situation I stuck to my guns and protected my cat.

I should have lodged a complaint but had my hands full and nothing would have come of it.

Be a Karen if you need to, people.

When I lived in Melbourne I had a pet cockatiel. I had to get yearly check ups, and the only Avian vet was out in Burwood, so taxi it was.

But every time I called to book a taxi, I told them I’m coming with a bird in a large cage and I could spill water. Just because I was worried about getting turned down for a ride.

FYI, the taxi drivers always loved it.

Yeah after that I always verbally confirmed that a cat would be riding with each booking from the new company. And then they automated bookings so I couldn’t anymore…

The speculation and response to this murder has been intriguing. I saw a comment online speculating that if rich people instead of kids start being targets of shootings, perhaps there will finally be movement on the question of gun control.

The same with a good rich fruit cake. Lots of brandy, and lots of time to mature the flavours. I’m currently eating the fruit cake I made last year, and I need to get more brandy before I can make another for next year.

Bought ones are horrible. Gotta be homemade and with decent ingredients. Omit all citrus peel if that’s what’s provoking the gag reflex. The mix of fruit is OPTIONAL - can use any dried fruit to make up the volume required. I like having apricot and dried cranberries in the mix but that’s just me. My sister uses more sultanas than the Ottoman Empire at its height, dried mango and paw paw, and no currants at all. Both of us use whisky rather than brandy as such. Brandy belongs in the brandy butter to be served with it in our households.

The real joy of xmas pudding is Boxing Day breakfast, with slices of pud fried in a mix of equal quantities of brandy butter and orange juice, with custard. Perfect, I say perfect, hangover cure.

That is true. A good fruit pudding is very expensive to make, so it’s common for ingredients to be skimped on. Plus some have a wierd taste/texture - I think it’s too much date or fig or something like that, it reminds me a lot of the vegan “treats” that some people seem to love but I find revolting.

      Agreed

I went in yesterday and was kinda surprised by how much stuff was still on the shelves at my local store. I do wish there was some way we could redirect the Karen’s away from yelling at the poor people working the store, and instead getting them to have a cheeky punch on with the CEO lady. I’d paid to see that

It’s a Victorian distribution centre where the strikes are happening, I suspect WA would have their own separate centres given the distance from coast to coast, so unless their workers join the blockade there probably won’t be much interruption there.

I go there because I want to keep on top of any important news that is happening, not to be entertained, so the new version is pretty useless for me. A bit sweltery out there already. I managed to get the back garden area mostly weeded and did some cutting back of overhanging trees and the bamboo.

I had a parsnip and carrots self seed in there early this year, so weeding has yielded me a basket full of carrot and parsnip (mostly parsnip). I think I’ll be taking some of the parsnip up to the food cupboard, I doubt I’ll be able to eat it all myself. If I can find enough enthusiasm to brave the heat and pick some more cherries I might take some of those up too, but right now I think it’s way to hot and icky to contemplate it/

Welcome to the time of the year where I cry at the drop of a hat. This morning we’ve had because my eyeliner is wonky, my pants feel scratchy, a song made me think of my dog and IDK, just work in general. Today sucks.

Something positive to balance the post is that I received a package of “homemade” jams and sauces and omg the roasted capsicum ketchup is delicious. And they threw in a sample of their raspberry jam and I want to bathe in it.
