Everytime I go on Reddit I feel myself getting shittier and shittier. I know that not following current events is sticking ones head in tyevsand, but it has such an impact.

Engagement is driven by rage. Engagement is also money. Hence, making readers angry enough to comment = profit.

It’s shit. Peeking your head out to check current events is alright, but hopping on the Enragement Engagement Train is a one way ticket to feeling bad all the time.

I think Reddit is better/less rabid than than aussie tv …lol

And following what current events? What is popular at the moment, what is being pushed for political reasons, what has had good press releases?

Because there is so much happening in the world and most never hits the newspapers on a regular basis.

Keeping up with current events is more about keeping up with the zeitgeist than anything.

Little of it ever impacts our own lives.

At my old age I just try to see trends and important local news, some foreign news too. 99% I ignore.

I find myself much more interested by international news.

Aussie news is basically all about housing/interest rates with the odd splash of violent crime.

Like what is Australia’s future exactly? Who do we want to be? What’s our goal? I feel like these questions are rarely answered, to say nothing of actual practical plans to get there.

@wscholermann @Seagoon_ And when politics is covered by most of the media, it’s basically presented as a clash of personalities and a footy game.

This Labor MP says this. This Coalition MP says that. Minister refuses to confirm. Party room sources say. This shadow minister made a gaffe. The opposition leader made comments attacking this. The prime minister responded by saying that.

And according to the latest opinion polls…

It’s really irrelevant to the everyday lives of most people!

Meanwhile, the thing that really matters from politics is the laws we live under. How government departments go about their job and deliver things like schools and hospitals. Which new train lines do or don’t get built. What the government funds, and who pays how much tax for it.

The focus should be on what issues people in the community are facing.

What kind of society do we have right now? What kind of country, state, and city do we want to live in?

What are the laws and policies right now?

What’s their impact on those issues? Are they helping or harming?

And how could they be different?

Colonies don’t have goals and who we are are colonial subjects.

The point of colonies is not nation building but extracting wealth.

Australia’s goal is that everyone can own a house which constantly increases in value. There are no practical plans talked about because it is not actually possible, the goal of constantly rising value conflicts with the goal of being available to everyone. Which is why talk about it around and around in circles.

Been in a found footage/handheld cam horror mood lately and watched what I think might be the worst movie I’ve ever seen called Dashcam.

It actually does a good (if not repetitive) job of jump scares but my god, the main character is such a piece of crap. The main character uses the same name as the actor and it’s set during covid and she’s anti-vax, anti-mask, etc. (apparently not too far off this persons personality), she steals her friends car, steals food, has zero redeemable qualities and to make it worse as she is being chased by this parasite/monster thing she starts uttering these random phrases like ‘cm on my tts, fk me in a’ etc. It is so so cringey.

    Worst of all

    spoiler

    She’s the only survivor.

Two others I watched are Unfriended, and Deadstream which were both good and I recommend them.

Unfriended is good, and I agree: Dashcam sucks ass.

I really really enjoyed Spree (2020). About a kid-turned-serial-killer who wants to go viral, but it’s all through his phone recording on the dash the inside of the car. I found the acting to be good, and enjoyed the overall plot.

On the found footage genre, I liked The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014), and Lake Mungo (2008) was exceptional, definitely recommend them both.

Also recommend Creep (2014) and it’s sequel, and As Above, So Below (2014).

The VHS series is hit and miss.

I love horror and this subgenre, apologies for the ramble.

Edit: I have also discovered that apparently 2014 was a pretty good year for film lol

One of the (many) advantages of moving here is I don’t have to worry about getting up at arse o’clock to open the gates for any deliveries - in this case Coles online.
In other news, my pattern of opposite sleep patterns to the DT continues - I had a restless night and weird dreams while y’all seem to have slept well and peacefully. shrug emoji

I went through so many tissues at the hotels we were at. In Mildura on Sunday alone I went through 2 boxes + half a roll of toilet paper. Monday night I went through a box plus a roll of toilet paper. The bin they gave us at both of them was tiny so I was basically doing runs to the toilet solely to get rid of all the tissues. Then when I got home I’ve only gone through 1 and a half boxes in a week

The other day, while out and about, I saw an older person with the telltale silver paint all over their gob. Like a junkie Homer Simpsons 3 o’clock shadow.

It looked ridiculous, and was sad, but the constant “gub gub gub gub” sound they made almost had me in fits. Not laughing at them, just a wild sight to see.

I saw a video on Reddit of a woman who crashed her car and was high as shit on compressed air or whatever people use for huffing from cans. Something about seeing her hit it every time somebody asked her a question and being so spaced out made me really depressed. Probably the best anti drug ad I’ve ever seen (even though it wasn’t an ad)

Did the old toy sale laybuy for Christmas at Big W.

Laybuy is surprisingly backward. You need to go in store to pay it off and they give you a receipt with a barcode you’re supposed to scan to do so

The pessimistic part of me says that’s because they don’t want laybys to compete with BNPL bs like AfterPay. Although that stuff should be meant for things you need right now but can’t afford, I imagine a lot less people would be using it at Christmas time if laybuys were as well advertised as after pay

I get that feeling too. It would be possible to turn that regular barcode into a QR code and associate it with a Big W account.

You don’t get into debt with laybuy, you don’t get an item you’re then obligated to pay off, and you not get as aggressive fees for cancelling a laybuy

Yeah, completely agree. I see the appeal of BNPL, but laybuys are so much better if you don’t need things right now. And since it’s not a debt, it’s one less bill you have to pay

Yesterday I started watching YouTube on my phone then I thought why not watch it on my tablet. Then today I thought why not through the TV you fucking dimwit. Seriously, I turned the TV down, set up my tablet on the foot stool to watch while laying down with the dog and no one said anything to me.

I hate YouTube on TVs, and really smart TVs in general. It’s always so laggy, and I haven’t quite worked out how to sideload apps onto them so have been stuck with 50 ads so I just don’t watch them.

Plus I feel like YouTube videos are almost always made to be watched on a computer at biggest, so blowing them up to a 55" screen never looks right to me, and a lot of videos aren’t in 4k.

There’s also a creator I watch who doesn’t have stabilisation on his camera and I can’t watch him on anything bigger than a phone screen or I get motion sick (even though I don’t normally get motion sick)

Absolutely wild night of dreams and trips to the loo (uh oh, last time that happened was hit by el rones a day or so after).

None of them made any sense and moved so fast. Get back from the loo, head hits pillow and bam, jump straight back into a very strange dreamworld.

And hyper sensitive hearing… Road noise dead of night was super deafening. In the shower this morning the white noise from the water led me to hallucinate that was I listening to carnival music ever so slightly in the background. I mean it was catchy, but I would’ve preferred a different genre.

I hope I’m not going mad yikes.

Lowkey though hope that happens again tonight (except the loo part)… Free trip!

First ever dish completely performed by the almost restored kukri:

So amazed by whoever(s) made that knife (I am working on it buddy trust me). Wasn’t great on fresh small chilli but the already dead calamari and lemon never stood a chance.
