The console will be available only without a disc drive which has to be bought separately, same goes for the stand
This costs nearly $1000 here in Canada (more after the disc drive and stand and tax), Sony’s gone fuckin’ nuts with the price on this thing
In Europe if you get the Ps5 Pro + disc drive and the stand it gets to about 950€… just crazy
are we returning to the good all days of PC being cheaper on top of being better in every way, seems unlikely but the price gap is closing, its kinda sad the super low price (for its specs) of the ps5 was basically the only good thing about it, to the point that i considered getting one until i remembered that i was gonna play like 2 games on it ever.
The regular PS5 isn’t going anywhere, and you still won’t be able to build an equivalent PC for near the same price as that, but the Pro is so much more expensive for relatively little gain that the price gap for that is pretty small, and on PC you’d get a better CPU too
I was downvoted in another thread when somebody claimed a barebones 550 USD build with a Ryzen 5600 and an RX 6600 would outperform the PS5 Pro. I find that hard to believe and claimed that in order to achieve that, the parts would be more expensive than the Pro model. We’ll see.
Yeah, I really don’t think an RX 6600 build would outperform the PS5 Pro at all, that doesn’t line up with what I’ve heard at all
From what I’ve heard, an RX 7700 XT build might be pretty close though, and a basic build with one of those and a 5600 would be not that much more than a PS5 Pro, which does definitely go to show how crap the PS5 Pro price is (especially since that CPU is probably better than the one in the PS5 Pro)
It…depends probably.
You can definitely build a competent gaming PC for less than a PS5, depending on the games you want to play. If you are playing like Factorio and Rimworld, you don’t need a 4090 or something like that.
I think a PS5 is probably better value if you are just looking at raw tech specs for technically demanding games. Historically consoles (except sometimes Nintendo consoles) are sold at a loss because the platform holder makes money back on software. I have no idea if this is true for the Pro, though I imagine it is.
But on the high-end, PCs are definitely more expensive. The PC I just built cost me several times more than a PS5 Pro would have. It is almost certainly technically more powerful than the Pro would be and I can do a lot more with it besides just play games.
For me, makes no sense to replace my PS5 with a Pro. I don’t even care about the whole disc drive thing people are in arms about, I haven’t bought a physical game since the PS3 era. My PS5 has a drive that has never been used once. I just don’t really see the benefit of the upgrade when I have the base version and a PC already.
A similar PC capable of 4k60 is more than double the price of the ps5 pro. I’m more upset about the digital only. I already have a pc for digital games, in fact a 4k60 capable one. I’d consider upgrading my ps5 and giving the old one to my brothers, but not if I lose access to my physical games or need a bulky external drive.
A similar PC capable of 4k60 is more than double the price of the ps5 pro.
I think that would depend on what you consider as “capable of 4K60”, because the PS5 Pro will almost certainly be far less capable of that than a build that’s double the price, especially since games that are already CPU-bound aren’t going to get much better framerates if at all
There’s more than two games on the PS5?
yeah but there are very few games that are on ps5 and not on pc and of that tiny handful there are only a smaller number i would want to play and the subsets of those games i would actually go thru the trouble of playing on a console for is smaller still. I have had a ps4 almost since launch and i think i have played only 4 games on it ever 2 of them because they were gifted to me and i wanted to try them, the witcher 3 because my PC at the time was a potato and zero dawn because its a amazing game, so considering that i think it would just be a waste to get a ps5 and i would probably feel bad about not using it too.
Consoles are obsolete imo, they used to provide some value before TVs were “smart” but thats gone.
I still think that cloud gaming is the next step forward, TVs with better chips with more features seems like the logical move. It even makes sense from the rentierist point of view.
Why is the EU price ~100€ more expensive than the US/UK one?
Yen too, even factoring in exchange rates it is about 850 USD in JPY. In terms of relative purchasing power, it is well over 1000 USD.
We designed the damn thing and it is the most expensive here. I can’t imagine they will have all that many domestic sales.
Most likely VAT tax, an old tsarist fiscal trick to fleece the poor. Or maybe just the new trick to fleece the poor by creating aspulled link between dominant and vassal imperialist currency, since VAT isn’t constant in EU, it’s from 17% (Luxembourg) to 27% (Hungary)
Just a reminder that the USSR had a VAT as its main tax revenue for almost its entire existence.
Yeah, a rare Soviet L, i guess there were troubles in tax collection during NEP, since iirc it was implemented around that point. Still, the context of this tax in socialism and capitalism is kinda different, right now indirect taxes in general are main part of overall regressive tax system (like in Poland poor people pay total around 60% tax, rich one 20-30% and richest who know how much, probably even less). And Poland for example did not had VAT in socialism.
The reason for the VAT (in the USSR it was called a Turnover Tax. They’re the same thing but a VAT does not tax means of production) was how incredibly simple it was to administer. Tax fraud could be kept relatively low for any given level of administration if a VAT was used instead of an income tax, for example. Many modern governments do this today for the same reason.
The USSR was constantly in a struggle to build an effective administration (a good book on this is Origins of the Great Purges ) while fighting what we today would call Bullshit Jobs and local strongmen.
Yeah
China and Vietnam still has a VAT tax system based off of the Soviet system as well
Isn’t the US price before taxes? In the EU they normally show it after taxes
I guess fuck you if you bought any PS5 discs.
A disc drive is available as an accessory. But I’m not defending Playstation with this, just pointing that out.
I have a PS5 and it seems like it will the last console I will ever buy. Getting second hand discs for cheap was one of the reasons how I rationalised the purchase. Sadly games don’t release on discs as often now. With that and consoles getting more and more locked down they are becoming more rent extracting than ever.
I don’t even understand the point of a beefier PS5 when games that should run fine on it run like crap. That is not something downloading more RAM is gonna fix. I’m thinking of games like Wo Long, Jedi Survivor etc.
I’m gonna try and get a PS5 Pro. If/when I move to China, I figure it’d be easier to get one here in the states first.
look into region locking first just to make sure it’ll work when you’re in China
Apparently the PS5 isn’t region-locked. Playstation Network accounts are region-locked, but as long as I create an account in China, games from any other region will remain playable.
This is correct, I use a US PS5 in Japan and there is no issue.
I just have multiple PSN accounts for different regions. Even if you wanted to use the off-region PSN account outside that region you could, you would just have to do some workarounds to fund the digital wallet. Though there are plenty of sites that sell PSN codes that would work, I have used in the past and never been an issue.
Sweet. I’m used to buying PSN cards for the digital wallet anyway.
Are China and Japan considered the same region for purposes like this?
For what it’s worth the new GPU is a decent upgrade and it will support that PSSR AI upscaling tech they’ve been working on. I still don’t think it’s worth it, especially if you already have a PS5 or a relatively modern PC. This seems more aimed at people who have an outdated PC and haven’t bought a current gen console yet.
The price is still nuts, though. I would be interested to see how well it sells because with everything being so damn expensive now I would imagine not many people are racing to spend $700 on a console (with only one game included lol).
It could be justified if it wasn’t so locked down. Like you get high end hardware, just so you can be sony’s paypig.
At this point the best thing that could happen to the PS5 is for people to find a reliable jailbreak. With Linux it would probably make a decent PC. In terms of specs the hardware is comparable to a Xeon based workstation from the early-mid 2010s.
Feels like the homebrew custom rom community fell off a cliff over the past decade.
they all were arrested
Ha, really though, 10 years ago everything was getting jailbroken and custom roms were everywhere. Gaming consoles, IPods… maybe I’m just off the scene but there’s a few things I wish there was alternative firmware for and there’s nothing.
You’re telling me, I remember the days where you could jailbreak the iPhone by visiting a website and clicking a button!
