Out of the 800,000 people each year who committed suicide, on average perhaps more capable than the rest of us, what if a few would have been instrumental in developing fusion power?

I don’t like arguments like this. Especially when it comes from someone in the tech field. It seems to imply that climate change is a technical problem and that some silver bullet solution from a savant will solve it. Meanwhile in the real world, the economic and political system has been blowing all the increasing energy capacity on useless stuff like cryptocurrency and now AI.

  • Personally I think movies are never as good as a medium like books, TV series, video games, comic books when it comes to telling a story. There is a lot of rigidity when it comes to movies owing to their running time, the average wait time between successive entries to a movie series, and the assumption that they are meant to be watched uninterrupted.

My favourite pieces of media are Disco Elysium and a comic book series and their way of storytelling is a big reason I like them. It cannot be replicated with movies.

I’m willing to concede that the movie format can be used in more creative ways but as things stand it is entirely at mercy of big corporations (the producers and the theater cartel).

  • No. They have a bot which first makes accounts on random fediverse microblogging platformsz then they spam posts where they tag a random small subset from a very large list of fediverse accounts known to them. Lemmy communities appear as users on these platforms, so whenever they tag an account of our community we see their post here. It is pretty bizarre really.

  • I think it is mostly because of heavily ingrained western chauvinism and white supremacy. If you are normal, decent human being in the imperial core and if you have a sober view of the collective atrocities committed by the colonial, settler and imperial powers, I find it hard to see how you are not consumed by tangible disdain of the foundation of your civilisation that you have the time and energy to stand shoulder to shoulder with neocons in criticising global south countries for their perceived flaws. I think it’s because of racism more often than not.

  • which country is actually more democratic?

As yogthos once said for these people democracy is a procedural thing. Whether how closely the outcome approximates the will of the people is inconsequential. It is all about multi party elections and ballots.

India is below DPRK in Global Hunger Index. DPRK for context is the most besieged country in the world with a geography that is inhospitable to agriculture. Malnutrition in India is such a problem that it has its own wikipedia article and the government has stopped publishing the stats for it (democracy moment). I walk around where I live and I see so many stunted adults and children. It’s really sad. China on the other hand is one of the most well fed countries in the world, which is crazy considering their size and their non-colonizer origins.
