Family movie night over the past 3 days
The Departed
Fight Club
Seven
Parenting of teens done right
I love all of those films!!
Se7en is my favourite from that list though, it’s just such a visceral experience!
MARGE!
The most exciting thing that’s happened in my suburb all week is that it’s rained heavily.
The even worse part is that I’m excited
“Oh wow! It’s almost hailing! I’d better go and look out the window! Wowsers that’s intense! Off to the back door to have a better look!”
God I miss living closer to the city.
peace and quiet is a good thing
Not for me unfortunately. I love the chaos of the city.
I thought I’d like it out here but it’s not for me.
I wish I could trade, but somehow I don’t think you want this kind of chaos
oh I love the city too, I’m basically at the beach doing rehab, taking a break from a wild wild life …lol
( This is the first time in over 25 years i have been further than 1 km from the CBD )
I threw away the yummy new zealand lollies I bought with my b’day money , sigh, I can do this
on a really good note I bought the young seagoons a complete kitchen’s worth of new and near new italian stainless steel cook ware for pennies on the dollar, they are stoked
I also bought a box of hand made ceramic dining ware for them, a blender, a juicer and a giant good quality microwave
I know there’s the saying with sugary stuff that it it’s in your shopping basket, it’s in your mouth, but surely throwing them out was a bit mean to yourself? Unless you didn’t want them at all or had no restraint?
no restraint
and Miss Seagoon is bringing in a small quantity in a few weeks so I have something to look forward to
ear worm
this is the 8th day of Macarena .
Is it the most brain dominating toe tappinating song in the history of the universe?
EYYYYYYY MACARENA
a million good songs and my brain chooses macarena
I’m so sorry
Everyone was so helpful when I had the cider drink…
We sang the song that reminds you of the good times
Had some nice sourdough toast for breakfast. It’s been a while since I just had some good bread.
There’s a nice sourdough bakery near us but I stopped making trips there after the kids were born, and they stopped making bread during the week while some roadworks were happening at the train station down the road.
More horror film reviews. Please note that all these films below feature
TW
gore to varying degrees, and mental health issues and suicide (especially Fréwaka).
V/H/S/Beyond (2024) -4/5 Hobbits
I enjoyed this anthology film, all the segments as well as the framing wrap-around were very intriguing and engaging, except for one which didn’t fit at all with the theme of this being about aliens.
Definitely worth a watch, especially for the segment called Stowaway, directed by Kate Flanagan and written by Mike Flanagan (actress and creator, respectively, of Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, and The Fall of the House of Usher, which is probably why it’s my favourite segment lol)
V/H/S/Halloween (2025) - 1/5 Hobbits
Very meh for me such that I did not finish it. Perhaps this anthology hits harder for audiences that celebrate Halloween, but it felt very tropey and made me feel quite bored.
V/H/S/94 (2021) - 5/5 Hobbits
So far my favourite of the V/H/S anthology film series. Perfectly gory and disturbing, the wrap-around framing was very interesting, and each segment had me on the edge of my seat. This one is definitely not for people who are squeamish, the gore effects are very well done!
Fréwaka (2024) - 5/5 Hobbits
I thoroughly enjoyed this Irish folk horror. Exploring themes of paranoia, the Aos Sí, Magdalene Laundries, and familial ties. Blends the mythology of The Fair Folk expertly with the human emotions of grief and bargaining. No real jumpscares, I won’t go on so as to not spoil too much, but I definitely highly recommend this.
Death Valley (2021) - 2/5 Hobbits
Also meh but I finished this one, so it gets one more star than V/H/S/Halloween. Blending resident evil, Nephilim, zombies, and sci-fi, I would have had a better experience if it just picked a lane and leaned into it instead of trying to everything and making a mediocre film. Watch if you want something on in the background and don’t care about the stupid plot. I’m not sure how the film wanted me to feel about the antagonists - one moment it seemed I should me sympathetic, the next made them completely irredeemably evil, and then switches again and again. MEH
Belzebuth (2017) - 4.5/5 Hobbits
This is the opposite of Death Valley (2021) in that it does pick a lane (Catholicism and demons) and blends it well with a little bit of sci-fi. Great acting on Joaquín Cosíos part, and was pleasantly surprised to see an actor (Tate Ellington) I saw in The Endless (2017) as one of the protags. Well worth a watch if you’re into possession and demon horror. The ending felt like it would be right at home for Catholics who love religious horror (not sure what the overlap is for that haha).
Note: this one does feature mass child murder (not actually shown on screen but is the main plot points).
I don’t have Shudder or places to find these but I’ll watch a random B grade horror in solidarity!
Shudder does have a 7 day free trial, hence why I’m going absolutely ham on watching all these films 😂
If you like a slow burn found footage, The Borderlands is on YT in its entirety (not on shudder in Aus yet). It’s one of my favourites. No gore, just a haunted church lol
Vhs are like the original analog horror and they’re awesome!
I wish they had the first and second V/H/S films on Shudder, but they do have all the others.
I’m also hanging on for the 30th of Oct because I binged all the Hell House LLC movies and the last one comes to Shudder on that date! I fucking love those films! I haven’t rated Hell House LLC yet but overall the 1st and 4th films are the most solid, with 2 and 3 being only slightly less good. I fucking LOVE found footage horror, and I think it’s why I ADORE analog horror so so much
I haven’t heard of hell house, will have to suss. I’m guessing you’ve seen Local 58 and Vita Carnis?
I LOVE LOCAL 58!!! Kris Straub is a fucking legend (also a part of Acquisitions Inc (a DnD campaign) and a comic artist!) and Vita Carnis is just -chefs kiss-
Fuck yes!!! Local 58 freaked me the fuck out when I first saw it lol.
Know any other good ones?
Kane Pixels - Creator of the original The Backrooms analog horror. His series The Oldest View is awesome, and currently has a new series that’s out on YT but not finished yet
This House Has People In It by Adult Swim
The Walten Files is an adult version of Five Nights at Freddy’s (which I hate lol, but love The Walten Files)
The Mandela Catalogue is great from a lore pov, the images are a bit overdone but that’s because every other mediocre analog horror series tends to take inspo from TMC with making human faces look stupid. I recommend this one though.
Angel Hare is amazing!
Gemini Home Entertainment is a 10/10 for me
Midwest Angelica is another 10/10 for me
Greylock is also fucking awesome
Perfect!!!
Thanks so much :)
Time for reading then bed :)
Goodnight everyone (and I’ll see you here later insomniacs lol) ❤️
I get really excited when it’s Lamb Day.
Home is chaos but I chose to prioritise food and friends this weekend. This week I am aiming to eat fresh and lower fat/sugar. And to get up between 6/6:30 each day. I need to.slot into a rhythm
You go girl!
I plan on eating no peanut puffs all week even though I have 10 bags left and I dream about them.
it takes a while to make order from KAOS, I am halfway there and even halfway there feels great
you can do this :)
Stir fry boxed up. Now to lamb stew
I’ve had a lovely time babysitting the siblings, and will now spend an afternoon happily cooking things
I highly recommend not having to run any errands on a Sunday. That’s all I’m going to say :(
3 interviews this week.
Tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.
There’s definitely a feeling of down heartedness with the rejections but I generally make it to the final round for the ones I’ve proceeded with.
Due to circumstance it’s imperative that I be employed full time, but I know it’s only a matter of time.
It’s definitely a situation I’m glad to be out of, I’ve always struggled when I’ve needed to get a job. The last time I think it was about three months out of work before I got something, and then I got two offers within the same week!
I’ve got my fingers crossed for you. The search sucks, but you will get there.
It’s funny how it all works out. I’ve had the same experience. Crickets then all of a sudden multiple offers.
Thanks for the kind words :)
Fingers and toes crossed mate. I have a feeling something good is going to come along for you :)
That’s really kind of you :)
Hey good luck man! 🍀🤞🏼
Much appreciated :)
So after many many months I have finished my listen of all the Terry Pratchett Discworld books in order. Had read a couple before but not the series and the newish penguin audiobooks are great. Such good company as I potter around cooking and stuff. Such incredible storytelling and characters.
Now I am a bit lost. What should I listen to next? Any good long form podcasts or audio series out there? Non fiction is fine but not current affairs. I get enough news and try to limit the doom…I currently have an audible account but might ditch the subscription now this big listen is done…
If you haven’t read April Fool’s Day by Bryce Courteney that’s a really good read. It is a tribute to his son who died of AIDS. It’s sad but it’s very well written.
Oh man that book was painful
On yes I have read that. Its heart wrenching but very good.
Another one I can think is; I can jump puddles by Alan Marshall.
That one was interesting. I remember him hiding what happened on the pony ride to school
