Some of the instances have a community bent to them. Slrpnk and beehaw come to mind most immediately, but there are lots of others that are focused on gathering a specific niche of humanity and getting them to interact with one another.
Managed to get federation right well after establishing this account.
Itt, I struck a chord? Not sure why I’m being downvoted.
Another IT person here. Same answer as was already stated. I self-host the stuff I have to meet my requirements. I don’t need a Lemmy instance. If world goes away, I’ll set up somewhere else and continue with my life.
So 9-5, and often way more than that, is spent computering for money. Free time needs to have as little “have to do” computering as possible.
No interest in it, I have a long list of other projects I would enjoy more.
I host about 30 services, so it has crossed my mind. But I like the instance I am on now. Also, since it would almost definitely be just me on there, it would be a colossal waste of time, effort, and resources.
executive dysfunction
Why would I?
Because even if I had the time or inclination to find out how to do it, I have no desire to do so, much less the interest in paying server hosts and whatever else. Why do I need my own instance? The one I use now is fine.
It gives you a bit more freedom in that you can federate or defederate with whatever instance you want, you can make your own communities that are free from other instance admin descisions like fed/defed. Less risk of losing your account.
I am an IT guy, this means that I work with IT for a living, I spend my days banging a spanner against Microsoft 365, Entra and other systems and make them do stuff.
I don’t want to pay for the privilege of doing the same on my free time for no pay.
Now, I see that you are a lemmy.world user, let me ask you the same question:, why haven’t you created your own instance yet?
I own dullsters.net but I keep it “pure” by not using that account out here. That way any outside visitor to the site only sees dull stuff.
What do you mean with “pure”?
Will it get tainted by you having an account there?
If I subacribe or visit any communities elsewhwere then those will show on mthe all feed on my instance. So I just have an admin account over there.
Then, what is the point of it?
I can assure you, people will find the level of dull acceptable.
In fact, I’d go far enough to say they’d like this stuff even more than anyone else.
I mainly want to participate and post stuff here, not administrate and maintain a server.
For me it has been very little work. We’ll see how the 1.0 update goes.
Don’t own a domain, don’t own hardware that is on 24/7, and kinda don’t need one.
You make my first point. I don’t own a domain.
