So. What Am I getting banned?
Kit comes across like a dickhead from that screenshot.
An arrogant teenager?!?
I don’t know them to judge them. I can only just the interaction and there’s not even context for that. They could be a perfectly nice adult.
Oh, it’s “Kit”, not “kid”.
Dismiss my comment.
Haha, no worries. It’s an easy mistake to make.
I seem to be missing some context - anyone want to fill in the rest of the class?
Edit: the image being shown to lemmy users is not being shown to mbin users, so here it is for those like me: https://imgur.com/q4zuZzz
Must be your instance. I can see it fine from kbin.melroy.org.
Well, now that’s just discrimination :(
Weird though!
Edit: it also doesn’t show for kbin.earth (which is running mbin) - I’m curious what the source of the problem is for this strange and seemingly-arbitrary minority of users https://kbin.earth/m/[email protected]/t/1028068/So-after-using-Lemmy-for-1-5-Years-You-are-telling#comments
why do mbin links always break on lemmy?
Minor bug in the UI / frontend I guess - you could try reporting it to the lemmy devs on GitHub if there isn’t already a GitHub issue for it
hmm, is it possible that maybe both of those mbin instances blocks imgur? I have accounts on both but I’m using fedia as my main
if this keeps up I might just abandon mbin and go with Lemmy while waiting for piefed lol…
Seems like there are other Imgur submissions on Fedia that mostly work fine (no thumbnail, but the image itself shows up if you click on the expando thing in the UI) https://fedia.io/d/imgur.com
I did notice that at some point around the time of my second comment Imgur was having some issues (I was given a JSON file instead of a webpage or image when I found and clicked on the image that OP submitted), so maybe fedia and a few other instances just got unlucky with the timing?
If you notice it becoming a recurring problem you can report it on Fedia’s meta magazine/community: [email protected]
sure, I’ll try to keep an eye out for problems.
Not really sure how that works with federation. You’re not “using” lemmy.world, you’re using lemm.ee, which has a copy of content from lemmy.world.
I think you’ve pretty much nailed it. KFC can’t ban you from buying a Burguer King that McDonalds is secondhand selling.
I’m still not entirely sure where each individual parcel of data is stored.
My account is on sh.itjust.works; the URL for the page I’m viewing this in is a sh.itjust.works address, this post and comment thread are from lemmy.world. When I hit reply in a few minutes my time, this comment will be sent to sh.itjust.works. Does it get stored there, or does it get forwarded to lemmy.world and stored there? If sh.itjust.works shuts down, does this comment disappear with it?
Possibly depending on how that works, viewing one lemmy instance’s content from another may not be “using that instance” but posting or commenting might be.
Does it get stored there, or does it get forwarded to lemmy.world and stored there? If sh.itjust.works shuts down, does this comment disappear with it?
Your own content gets stored on your own instances and every instance it’s federated with. It’s not sh.itjust.works or lemmy.world, it’s both of them.
Why would you ever admit your age online?
I’m as old as the max age for Legos
I’ve been celebrating the anniversary of my 40th birthday for years now…
I’m not 23. Nobody likes you when you’re 23.
23yr old women are quite popular.
Quite

What’s my age, again?
I like how knowing all these lyrics will convince people that all of you are older than 23.
It is 26 years old. That is a quarter of a century. Just like a 1975 song was called an “oldie” in 2000, it’s fair to call this an oldie now.
Edit: “What’s my age again” is closer to ABBA’s “Waterloo” than it is to today.
Oh no
And you still act like you’re in freshman year
They only want you when you’re 17, when you’re 21 you’re no fun.
Eh, I don’t really see an issue with it at my age, but I guess for younger people it could be bad. I’m in my 40s now, but aside from producing some data to be mined, I don’t see how people knowing that hurts me.
What Klient allows you to create tags for users?
Thunder also allows user tags. Highly recommend it.
Voyager
This looks like Voyager
but it might be an instance setting.
Edit: it is an experimental setting in voyager.Absolutely accurate tag
I’m 92.
Hi 92, nice to meet you. How old ya
I got that guy tagged as a mushroom, beware.
Uh oh!
If 16 is too young for Lemmy, 92 is unfortunately too old.
I’m sorry, but if you can’t use it during the first 17 years of your life, you shouldn’t be allowed to use it during the last 17 years either!!!11 Rules are rules…
Oh, ok. I’ll be sure to stop using when I’m 134 years old. Just to rule out the last 17 years.
No one under 18 years of age or under the regulated minimum age defined by your local law (whichever is higher), is allowed to use or access the website.
https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/#introduction
Curious choice
Dealing with data protection laws surrounding children is a MASSIVE pain. Most Lemmy servers ignore the GDPR safely, but ignoring COPPA is a bit harder. And that doesn’t even take into account the recent rise of laws blocking teenagers from social media, with varying ages and consent laws.
“safely” as in are too small for the regulatory bodies to care. Takes one report though.
Basically. Although, it kind of depends on what a server gets reported on first. If it’s just something like account deletion or data exports, that can be done manually, just not on scale.
It’s legal boilerplate.
There’s probably some law that require it.
young padawan, the first lesson you ever learn on the internet is never admit your age until it no longer matters
I’m too old for this to matter, but is somebody really expected check the ToS of the server the community they’re posting in is on, or is this just a CYA kind of thing?
Federation makes this untenable.
Yeah just ignore and move on. They probably just put that there so they dont get sued for making porn available to minors without warning or something.
Yes, unless you accept the risk of being banned. Every community and every server has its own set of rules.
You can usually safely ignore these rules, but if you get banned you don’t have a leg to stand on if you didn’t bother with reading the rules.
Damn RIP then if I got banned from .world after this post I am leaving Lemmy.
Being banned on world news and politics sub’s just mean you are doing everything right
There other places on fedi for freedom enjoyers to congragate…
I have blocked every single poltics community. It’s instance problem not a community problem.
Lemmy.world?
Yea
I don’t think this is accurate… .world has several of it’s major sub’s who are essentially operate like regime front on fedi ie they follow reddit mod template.
When dead ceo happened they all had a melt down and blocked discussion about that and Luigi citing that they qr elegally obligated to do this and server admin told them to do it.
That turned out to be a fat lie becuasr largest fedi Luigi community is hosted on Lemmy.world
Actually server is fine, it is these neo liberal apologist clowns who operate major sub’s are the issue IMHO
Just… don’t make an issue of it? Apologize and delete some posts?
TBH lot of the internet has an “over 18” requirement somewhere in the ToS, for good reasons, and… yeah.
I have over 2000 posts. And I never hided the fact that I am a teenager.
Not all them, just the thread in the screenshot. With a little apology or something. See what happens.
This is Lemmy, no one wants to ban a good poster.
Looks like you were ten minutes ago: https://lemmy.world/modlog/?userId=1957570 Though I guess you’ll never see this message, then.
Oh no… Don’t… Stop…
Like hell even someone care LOL
is somebody really expected check the ToS of the server the community they’re posting in is on,
Technically yes. Practically nobody does.
I disagree. If they want to federate, it is up to them to censor the content they want to share. But I believe in some places, doing so would just open them up to greater liability because they are no longer acting as a “common carrier”.
No. All of your direct interactions are with your instance which federates with others.
This is one of the reasons why I’m against the anti-intellectualism trend of trying to “consolidate” Lemmy communities. Basically subjects everyone who is potentially interested in a given subject to submit to one singular ToS of the (artificially) “popular” community du jour.
So, I am gonna check TOS of every instance wherever I am posting?
You should understand the rules of the places you are posting to, yes.
This is why “let’s pretend this is centralized social media and ignore the fact that we’re all on different websites” is a bad idea, actually. You don’t get to parachute into someone else’s house and expect the rules of your own home apply.
I read the rule of community and instance but not TOS.
Are you really surprised about being banned after admitting to breaking the rules and then expressing intent to circumvent a ban?
Imageine this, but with email.
Hell back when I was banging it didn’t matter, but they did ask, so we thought it did matter and we all lied. I think my ol’ AIM acct thinks I’m like 85 now.
According to my google account I’m 55 years old.
This just hit me.
How long until governments create email accounts or digital identities (I mean they already have the latter). Then they force social media platforms (who n turn force users) to use/link that as age verification and content blocking.
This meme could have been an email!
Someone needs to ban this MINOR right now before I call the cyber police. 😤
Consequences for my actions?!
That doesn’t make sense. Iirc, lemmy.world doesn’t host any of your content or manages your account, it simply just displays it.
This can get a bit complicated with federation. This community is hosted on LW. I am accessing it via sopuli.xyz, and you via feddit.uk. All (presumably) have full bidirectional federation with each other.
When I hit send, this message will go to Sopuli’s outbox, which will then sync to LW for this community. At that point, this post will live on LW’s servers. Anyone accessing LW directly can see it, even if Sopuli were to go down. Later (probably less than a minute), LW will sync to Feddit.uk, at which point you will be able to see it.
Note that this is for text posts only. There have been some changes around images and video, both for bandwidth and liability reasons.
is this like traveling to another country where the drinking age is lower
No, it’s like a 19 year old being on a conference call with Americans having a beer and Americans telling him he can’t because in America the law is 21
I’m calling the police.
Easy there, Karen.
Why is Kit on instance X gatekeeping a user in instance Y from accessing a community on instance Z?
Gives me vibes of old man yelling at kids to stop having fun.
