I seem to be missing some context - anyone want to fill in the rest of the class?

Edit: the image being shown to lemmy users is not being shown to mbin users, so here it is for those like me: https://imgur.com/q4zuZzz

Well, now that’s just discrimination :(

        Weird though!

Edit: it also doesn’t show for kbin.earth (which is running mbin) - I’m curious what the source of the problem is for this strange and seemingly-arbitrary minority of users https://kbin.earth/m/[email protected]/t/1028068/So-after-using-Lemmy-for-1-5-Years-You-are-telling#comments

Minor bug in the UI / frontend I guess - you could try reporting it to the lemmy devs on GitHub if there isn’t already a GitHub issue for it

hmm, is it possible that maybe both of those mbin instances blocks imgur? I have accounts on both but I’m using fedia as my main

if this keeps up I might just abandon mbin and go with Lemmy while waiting for piefed lol…

Seems like there are other Imgur submissions on Fedia that mostly work fine (no thumbnail, but the image itself shows up if you click on the expando thing in the UI) https://fedia.io/d/imgur.com

I did notice that at some point around the time of my second comment Imgur was having some issues (I was given a JSON file instead of a webpage or image when I found and clicked on the image that OP submitted), so maybe fedia and a few other instances just got unlucky with the timing?

If you notice it becoming a recurring problem you can report it on Fedia’s meta magazine/community: [email protected]

Not really sure how that works with federation. You’re not “using” lemmy.world, you’re using lemm.ee, which has a copy of content from lemmy.world.

I’m still not entirely sure where each individual parcel of data is stored.

My account is on sh.itjust.works; the URL for the page I’m viewing this in is a sh.itjust.works address, this post and comment thread are from lemmy.world. When I hit reply in a few minutes my time, this comment will be sent to sh.itjust.works. Does it get stored there, or does it get forwarded to lemmy.world and stored there? If sh.itjust.works shuts down, does this comment disappear with it?

Possibly depending on how that works, viewing one lemmy instance’s content from another may not be “using that instance” but posting or commenting might be.

Your own content gets stored on your own instances and every instance it’s federated with. It’s not sh.itjust.works or lemmy.world, it’s both of them.

Dealing with data protection laws surrounding children is a MASSIVE pain. Most Lemmy servers ignore the GDPR safely, but ignoring COPPA is a bit harder. And that doesn’t even take into account the recent rise of laws blocking teenagers from social media, with varying ages and consent laws.

Basically. Although, it kind of depends on what a server gets reported on first. If it’s just something like account deletion or data exports, that can be done manually, just not on scale.

    Federation makes this untenable.

Yes, unless you accept the risk of being banned. Every community and every server has its own set of rules.

You can usually safely ignore these rules, but if you get banned you don’t have a leg to stand on if you didn’t bother with reading the rules.

I don’t think this is accurate… .world has several of it’s major sub’s who are essentially operate like regime front on fedi ie they follow reddit mod template.

When dead ceo happened they all had a melt down and blocked discussion about that and Luigi citing that they qr elegally obligated to do this and server admin told them to do it.

That turned out to be a fat lie becuasr largest fedi Luigi community is hosted on Lemmy.world

Actually server is fine, it is these neo liberal apologist clowns who operate major sub’s are the issue IMHO

Just… don’t make an issue of it? Apologize and delete some posts?

I disagree. If they want to federate, it is up to them to censor the content they want to share. But I believe in some places, doing so would just open them up to greater liability because they are no longer acting as a “common carrier”.

This is one of the reasons why I’m against the anti-intellectualism trend of trying to “consolidate” Lemmy communities. Basically subjects everyone who is potentially interested in a given subject to submit to one singular ToS of the (artificially) “popular” community du jour.

You should understand the rules of the places you are posting to, yes.

This is why “let’s pretend this is centralized social media and ignore the fact that we’re all on different websites” is a bad idea, actually. You don’t get to parachute into someone else’s house and expect the rules of your own home apply.

This can get a bit complicated with federation. This community is hosted on LW. I am accessing it via sopuli.xyz, and you via feddit.uk. All (presumably) have full bidirectional federation with each other.

When I hit send, this message will go to Sopuli’s outbox, which will then sync to LW for this community. At that point, this post will live on LW’s servers. Anyone accessing LW directly can see it, even if Sopuli were to go down. Later (probably less than a minute), LW will sync to Feddit.uk, at which point you will be able to see it.

Note that this is for text posts only. There have been some changes around images and video, both for bandwidth and liability reasons.

Why is Kit on instance X gatekeeping a user in instance Y from accessing a community on instance Z?

Gives me vibes of old man yelling at kids to stop having fun.
