For those who don’t want to follow the existing 196 community move, some community members have made an alternative community on blahaj.zone

I am not directly involved in the new community, but I’m happy to share it for those looking for a blahaj based alternative.

Can you change the display name to something like “196 (archive)” so it’s easier to distinguish them?

lemmy-ui community selector with 196 in the search bar, showing two entries titled "lemmy.blahaj.zone/196

I think we should just keep the original [email protected] and pass control of this one on to the mods of the other one. If the existing mod team wants to leave that’s their choice but we shouldn’t end up losing this great community just because they want to migrate. This is our community.

I don’t really understand what 196 is all about (other than that one rule) but it feels too late to ask.

Aww, thanks! I’m kinda regretting not naming it oneninesix, but here we are. I guess I love letters.

To anyone wondering what’s up, I did this on my phone while out in the “big city”, so I’m still waiting to get home to do anything serious. I have a few suckers really nice people who volunteered for modding along with me. Anyone else who is interested, drop me a line. For those wondering, here’s my take on moderating the place.

      1. Moderation is to facilitate an experience for its users in line with the goals of the community and the instance. It’s not to push a personal agenda, give you a bigger hammer in debates, set up a digital fiefdom, etc. You certainly can and should include your mod experience on your dating profile, though. Unilateral decisions are not cool except in a few situations, like if 100% of your userbase is usurped by literal Nazis.

      2. 196 exists to be a place where you post something (often but not always something goofy) when you visit. I know not everyone does and that’s fine. I still love you. These things can’t be offensive or hurtful, though, especially not intentionally so. Unintentional vs intentional I believe is a HUGE distinction and needs to be considered when moderating.

      3. LBJ exists as an inclusive, (relatively) judgment-free zone for gender-diverse folks. I intend for us to uphold that here. I say relatively judgment free because there will be people looking to start shit and mods and admins are going to have to judge their actions, but only their actions.

If you wanna be my modder, you gotta get with my bullet points…or argue persuasively why I should amend them (but that part doesn’t fit the tune). The three big things I’m looking for otherwise are diverse viewpoints, if you can remain reasonably impartial, and if you can say you’re sorry. The last is huge for me. As a mod, you’re going to mess up. I used to mod on Reddit and I certainly did! I find it’s important for maintaining the community’s respect to be able to admit when you made a bad call and what you’ll do to avoid it in the future.

@[email protected], pointers would be welcome as I think you do a great job.

Community feedback is encouraged and welcome, just be aware I’ll be a little slow to respond today.

PS: wow, I really DO love letters!

Is there a reason we can’t just add a new mod team to the old 196?

I suppose that may feel a little “takeover”y by its them that decided to move.

    Whoop whoop, subscribed.

Also, on a personal note, having a bit more insight in to what was going on behind the scenes, I just wanted to thank you for the extra moderating you were doing over on 196, which their mod team has been open about undoing. Definitely feel safer in your hands than I do in theirs (though really hope for your sake you won’t have to step in as much anymore).

Despite using Lemmy for a while now. What’s the significance of this, and does it stop people from being able to interact with it?

Sorry, I really don’t know too much about this stuff.

Every “instance” of Lemmy is like an island. Every island has it’s own population. It has it’s own admin team with their own culture and ideals. It’s one of the strengths of Lemmy. Don’t like reddit’s admins? Deal with it or leave. Don’t like lemmy.ml’s? Okay just go to lemmy.world or thelemmy.club or any other instance. They’re all connected (unless they decide they don’t want to be… but for the most part they are connected), and you can comment and like and post to communities on other instances.

196 was originally on lemmy.blahaj.zone, but they seemingly have some kind of issue with the admin team there, apparently banning some users in a way that they disagreed with. So they decide to move to lemmy.world. But they never told the users or asked so everyone is kinda mad about that. Not everyone likes lemmy.world, especially since blahaj is known for being super-trans freindly and so is 196.

It looks like they decided to not move after all the drama though so…

Thank You! I found it absolutely hilarious that their ‘complaints’ were that you dared to enforce site-wide rules on their magazine/community. Thank you for all that you do.
