    I’m sort of ideologically opposed to the idea of hereditary peers, but they have confusingly been quite good at standing up to the nonsense of this and the last government.

      Yeah hereditary nature is outdated for sure, but it does feel like whatever replaces it needs to avoid being a popularity contest, and be kept isolated from democratic politics of the commons, to protect exactly this oversight role
