Every single time someone posts some random Tik Tok or Youtube short style video on Reddit… My blood instantly boils.

I don’t even know how to describe it, everything from the Editing, the stupid a*** click bait thumbnail, their tone… Literally all of it is just diarrhea of the mind 😣

Why is this s**** so popular? And kids are growing up watching this trash for 8 hours a day? The hell does that do to someone’s personality? Their psychological health?

How do ADULTS watch that crap non stop. How are their not embarrassed?

OP you might not understand just how deeply the shit goes. My 2 year old will only sit still if shes got my phone for YouTube shorts. Its bizarre.

    https://youtube.com/shorts/zQ7fSDxwOCM

I just opened youtube, clicked the first shorts and scrolled once to bring you this. Since the algorithm learns what you watch and what you skip and shit like that, my entire feed is riddled.

Edit to add : https://youtube.com/shorts/pJB0qzS7Q_k scrolled again, this was next up. When people talk shit on here because someone made an AI picture and “nice waste of energy bro” and “u suck AI slop” etc, I always think of that simpsons bit

People will just stop watching after a while. It’s all “the sky is falling” (it’s not) or “Wolf” (there is no wolf) and not much else. Anything good or interesting will eventually bubble over to other platforms or not be seen at all.

I am a visual person. Regardless of platform the uniform delivery style of all videos and shorts is tired. The tropes, the doing it for likes, monetisation, the monotone voice. There is little originality or genuine creativity to it. It could be good but the cycle of garbage combined with the self juicing algorithm makes it really irritating.

That’s like saying “I read a book once that I didn’t like, so all books are shit”

Tiktok is like all other streams - there’s a huge variety of content and it includes a lot of good and innovative creators. Yes, there’s a lot of utter shite, just lke reddit, facebook and even Lemmy.

But there’s also people who spend time making something good, sharing interesting things about their day and teaching what they know.

I understand having a dislike for a medium that encourages shallow, gimmicky, reactive content. I would put short form video and micro blogging (Twitter, etc) in the same category. I wouldn’t say “its all shit, why does it exist”, etc. But I know I’m not going to find much of my interest so I avoid it.

But then Reddit (and even Lemmy) get flooded by people just copying over that shit comment from other platforms. I understand the frustration of not really having any good way to avoid the trash.

        That’s all social media.

And Reddit has a huge amount of reposting/karmafarming bots as well as a lot of political/troll botfarms targetting it, and a lot of human trolls. And if you don’t have an adblocker, a sometimes miserable user experience. But Reddit also has the biggest userbase by a huge factor, a lot of really interesting subs with some really good content and people.

You can find positives and negatives about any platform or, really, anything anywhere. At least with social media platforms we have a choice as to whether we engage or not. That’s how you avoid the trash if you think the pool is full of shit - don’t swim in it.

Honestly, if someone genuinely believes “everything is shit” then maybe the problem is with them.

You sound like me. I hate it. I down use it and I am keeping note of the people who do. I truly believe this people should be considered dangerous, in the sense that if we leave up the future of our humanity to them it will crash and burn. These people are dim witted, and crude people. You aren’t alone but unfortunately we are the majority. Most people would say “what’s the problem you dont have to look at it?” 🤪. F_ck those people. They don’t have the mental ability to see that this is a disease at this point.

There’s a lot of other shorr from content. There’s a lot that’s just quick highlights of longer form stuff for instance.

My YouTube Shorts algorithm doesn’t have any of that type of shit in it. Because that’s not the type of stuff that I watch, that’s not the stuff it recommends to be either.

If you’re using a new or privacy focused web profile, it’s going to show a lot of random things because it has no idea what you would want.

I dunno, why don’t you figure out how to articulate what you don’t like about it before you condemn it as a format for communication?

kids are growing up watching this trash for 8 hours a day

I remember my parents saying this exact phrase about Saturday morning cartoons in the early 90s. They became glued to Fox News the very same decade. Interestingly, (some) cartoons today have diversity, inclusion, and complex character growth. Others are made by PragerU.

These modern portfolios will also diversify. Teach your kids media literacy and critical thinking to ensure they can find their way. It starts with YOU reviewing these concepts today. Your ability to notice the problem will not protect you.

What is a bad word? Do you spank it? Make it stand in a corner? Ridicule it endlessly with hurtful names?

It really depends on the content, and that’s the only thing I can agree with. If one is careful to “train” the algorithm to show certain things, it can be a way to pass the time.

I usually watch them at noon while I wait for my food, because anything else requires too much focus. My eyesight is not as good as it was to read the news on the phone, so just watching a bunch of funny cats jumping around is good enough.

I’m no one important, not a rocket scientist or quantum physics professor, so I don’t need to watch dissertations on mathematics. If I’m dumb, the world keeps spinning. I think that’s why a lot of adults have started watching those clips as well, we just don’t take ourselves so seriously anymore.
