Unironically, it was. That’s kind of the hidden message behind Star Wars - the rebel alliance’s full name is “the Alliance to Restore the Republic” - the Republic was never worth restoring. It was a corrupt, oppressive regime which at best allowed fascism to take over and at worst actively was itself fascist.
