thecool.tube isn’t approving videos :c
wow they instance still runs of 3.0.0 version of PeerTube.
Nobody is talking about it, because it doesn’t have a central front page for the videos with a global search box. Like this it’s just a fancy video hosting software, nothing that stupid masses can use.
Yeah, without the ability to search in a useful way, it’s useless for a viewer that isn’t already aware of a specific instance and its contents.
That isn’t about stupidity, it’s simply that it’s useless for the kind of viewing YouTube is.
There is SepiaSearch, but yeah, it specifically poses itself as just a search box, because a centralized front page is antithetical to decentralization…
Not really. Like searx, dozens of people can host decentralized but whole network spanning search instances. I think sepiasearch itself could be selfhosted.
I’ve also had VERY mixed luck with linked videos loading. It does work sometimes, but I feel like I’m rolling the dice every time I try one.
PeerTube work just like Lemmy, when it comes to federation. If you are on the front page of Lemmy.wtf you only see content that is federated specifically with lemmy.wtf. On PeerTube.wtf you also only see content that is federated. However, PeerTube support a “global search” that uses SepiaSearch and SepiaSearch knows about pretty much every PeerTube instance. So when you use the search box on peertube.wtf, it will search beyond the instances that federates with peertube.wtf.
https://peertube.lon.tv/ is down :/
And I don’t know why people think “monetisation are ads”. It’s nearly the first thing that came out of his mouth when talking about money. It feels like the facebook et al have just redefined what it means to monetise something and people assume it means ads. However, all it means is “to make a profit or derive income from” (dictionary.com). Ads are nowhere in the definition.
Exactly. The linux experiment for example has paid subscriptions for bonus content. There are so many alternatives to ads.
One caveat is that ads are probably the most straightforward for a lot of creators as they dont need to harass their customers. so it is the most comfortable probably.
I fully support this. Unlike Rossmann’s platform, this isn’t scraping YouTube and reposting videos without ads. This is a genuine competitor to YouTube using a decentralized network. Great! Keep it up! If I were a creator, I would definitely use this. The peer-to-peer aspect of it is fantastic, especially for live streaming.
AND you can subscribe with mastodon (and probably all other AP protocol using services soon).
We do still need a more streamlined content discovery process. I need to be able to have peertube recommend me stuff I might want to see if I so decide.
Btw, I‘m not a hater. I run a peertube instance myself: https://peertube.giftedmc.com
Send federation request to your instance :)
I just checked it out, scrolled down the main page. Looks good - well two videos popped up a dozen times but that also happens here.
The only thing I wish it (and YouTube) had was a description instead of just thumbnail and title.
Thats no problem. You can just add css to change those things iirc. Be the change you want to see. :)
