By culture, I mean mannerisms, references and key words and phrases (like madlad, woosh, etc)
It’s like Reddit if everyone talked about Linux
I’ve been here for awhile and I’m still trying to learn lemmy specific lingo thrown out like tankie and some others
Tankie is not Lemmy specific
Well, nor is madlad or whoosh but tabkie is used super often in Lemmy
Lemmy has a much higher proportion of Marxists to other users than Reddit does, so the anti-Marxism is also pretty high in response.
it’s exactly the same. maybe some of the “reddiquette” cultural problems are worse
That’s highly dependent on the instance I find.
Lemmy community is even worse because it’s less diverse.
The Reddit bot problem isn’t as prevalent in smaller, non-political subreddit.
Lemmy barely has any communities that aren’t political or tech related.
And most importantly, the NSFW communities are significantly under par.
I know right? Even though it is at times the most active community. Anyway, Lemmy gets brigaded A LOT.
I noticed that too. Hot button issues it gets filled with shills for whatever side. It’s very annoying and obvious that it’s happen because afterwards the interaction will disappear.
The obsession with Technology Connections seems to be unique to Lemmy. I think it’s memeified at this point!
Lemmy is a bit more open thanks for the modlog.
We literally don’t know how much is being censored and reddit because mods can remove anything they want without leaving evidence.
It feels more tech-geeky leftist and less AITA fantasy text/AI generated nonsense spam driven
But still pretty similar otherwise
I REALLY love that there’s no subreddits-as-hashtags bullshit here. That was insanely annoying to me on Reddit. Any speak of awards, too.
I can’t speak to the minutia but when I use Lemmy it just feels like a less popular Reddit to me. For me, that’s not a bad thing, just the vibe I get.
You’re a lot less likely to get downvoted for something that offends someone, even if it’s just a knowledge point.
Beans. The Lemmy version has much more beans.
like madlad, woosh, etc
I haven’t used Reddit for years, and I have no idea about those terms. If they’re a Reddit thing, I don’t recognise them.
Lemmy is also less tolerant of debate bros.
So yeah, they’re different
Wooosh isn’t a reddit thing though. I used to see it regularly way back in the slashdot days.
Been seeing whoosh creep in here and I downvote where I see it. It’s not funny, it’s just annoying
Someone frequently misses points.
I downvote puns when the topic isn’t comedic. I’m so over that shit.
they are in jokes and memes repeated ad nauseam in the defaults. ive seen woosh used a couple of times here.
it has a lot less users
Lemmy is closer to what Reddit was 15 years ago, before the masses piled in and made Reddit literally average.
Most of us are Reddit refugees, so we’re bringing all that baggage with us, whether we want to or not.
The main draw of Lemmy for me is the feeling that I’m less exposed to the corporate BS.
It also feels way less advertised, and for me feels non profit, like I can go through lemmy without seeing promoted BS that I never volunteered to see.
I’ve found that people actually have civil conversations here. Someone states a fact, another person asks for backup, it’s provided and the person says thanks I didn’t know that. Yeah there are less people here but I would take quality over quantity any day.
