Lazy fucks don’t vote in primaries. Turnout is less than 30% on average for the elections that decide their candidacy.
Nobody serious ran against Biden in the primary.
DeSantis & Haley ran against Trump, both lost by a wide margin. You could argue the turnout was still low, but I think those voters really do want Trump (for some reason).
I wish there were debates in the 2024 Democratic primaries.

However he declined. In general we don’t have an open primary when there is an incumbent. It may be a mistake, but that is what generally happens.
Also SOTU 2024 Biden was fine, so primary Biden 2023/2024 may also have been fine. The concern is if he can do it now and for the next four years. I think it’s possible, but he needs to prove it (or step aside).
This is the real answer. People didn’t care enough to pick better in primaries. Democrats didn’t have one (largely from tradition) and Republicans actually voted for Trump to be their guy.
