Careful what you wish for OP. There are some really bizarre, disturbing and/or dark movies out there.

So I imagine you’ve shown him a lot of classic movies like The Matrix, Fight Club, Princess Bride, etc. So here are my recommendations for movies I would have wanted to see when I was 17. Some are gonna be a bit unknown.

The Fifth Element Sci-Fi Epic, Action, Adventure

The Sting Caper, Comedy, Crime, Drama

      The Departed Crime, Drama, Thriller

      300 Action Epic, Drama

      Arrival Sci-Fi, Psychological Drama, Mystery

Almost Famous Coming-of-Age, Period Drama, Music, Adventure, Comedy

V for Vendetta Dystopian Sci-Fi, Political Thriller, Drama, Action

Edge of Tomorrow Alien Invasion, Sci-Fi Epic, Time Travel, Action Adventure

      Hook Fantasy, Swashbuckler, Adventure, Comedy

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World High-Concept Comedy, Action Fantasy, Romance

      Moon Sci-Fi, Psychological Drama, Mystery

      In order of my preference:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (probably watch the original Terminator also, but its not necesary) (This is a must watch, soooo goood. 😍🎞)

Interstellar (Space Travel, Very Exciting 🚀🌌)

      1917 (War Film)

Primer (Time Travel, get your mind blown 🕑)

12 Angry Men (1957) (This is about jury trial, might not be interesting for everyone, also its kinda old, very old, but very interesting)

These are what I have in mind right now, might remember some more later and post another comment.

I went into Interstellar completely blind when it came out. I can’t even describe how awesome it was watching that one for the first time. Easily up there on my top favorites.
