  • I know that they’ve been in power for 14 years, but the writing was on the wall for the Tories when they chose May. She empowered the right, and allowed BoJo to not only seize control, but to utterly purge the party of actual conservatives. Now that the Tories have been decimated, many of the established names in the party that were favourites to lead from both the right and the central ground lost their seats. The worst thing the Tories ever did was push the Brexit vote and then subsequently let the right get power, as they now face an existential threat for an entire generation.

For the Americans here, this is the one silver lining of Trump. In the same way that the surprise of the Brexit vote signalled the rise of Trump, you could potentially look at how the cult of personality around Brexit destroyed the Tories and see parallels to the Republicans. They’ve tied themselves solely to Trump, and if he were to lose there’s no real candidate that could realistically unite the country AND win the support of Trump (who will probably run again in 4 years time). He’s cast a shadow that has eclipsed the growth of right-leaning politics, damaging conservatism for the future.

  • The states are wrong. That’s a sausage roll, and it’s been a sausage roll for decades. The whole “pig in a blanket” thing is a new thing from people that basically reinvented the sausage roll and didn’t have the sense to check if it already existed.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that wars were started over less, and Australia and the UK would probably happily have their finger on the nuclear button if America doesn’t come to its senses and just embrace the correct food names…

Anger aside, I’m absolutely shocked that Greggs hasn’t tried to make its way stateside. Extremely cheap, fast food that’s greasy as fuck, has barely any nutritional value, and so convenient that you can just eat it out of the bag - sounds like an American dream.

  • It’s weird, because Pokémon didn’t invent turn-based RPG’s, nor did they even invent the pocket monster genre because Dragon Warrior Monster arguably had a better game than Pokémon out around the same time - with more monsters, breeding, and a better storyline.

But Red/Blue and Gold/Silver were great games of their time. Very basic, but great, mostly because of the world built around them. If you didn’t appreciate Pokémon, it’s probably easy to see why you’d find it dull.

  • I had been active on Reddit for close to 15 years, and left due to the API decisions. That move feels more justified every time I bump into Reddit, from being unable to view programming questions from a work VPN, to the emails begging me to invest in their IPO, to their exec pay fiasco.

Reddit is a shell of what it was, but I think this is largely due to stepping away from it. I know several people that use it religiously, and they don’t notice it as much as I do.

In a similar vein, Lemmy can have some absolutely batshit views too, and can also be incredibly toxic at times. We just don’t notice it as much because we’re used to it, but I bet some people new to Lemmy would see some posts/comments and think “eh, no thanks”. I won’t say that Lemmy is as toxic as Reddit, but the community size makes it more obvious on Reddit.

  • Oh man, the lack of a headphone jack is still a killer for me. It’s one of the reasons why I stayed on OnePlus 6 for so long, and to be blunt, I don’t see the Pixel 8 as a huge jump outside of power and bullshit like AI photos. My kingdom for a high-end phone with a headphone jack and stock-ish Android!

  • It’s a real shame that OnePlus just became an Oppo rebranding, because the OP1 was a phenomenal phone, and up until OP6 they were both cheap and had a relatively clean Android install. To date, features like gestures are still better than what you get on the Pixel, and most of their stuff is less invasive than Google’s.

The Android market nowadays, especially for high end, is “which manufacturer is the least shit”, and that’s a real shame.
