Okay, I know it’s not Scully and pretty sure it’s not Mulder, so who is it?

They knew that there were Abolitionists at other universities; they wanted to make sure their reputations would remain unsullied.
Kind of like how oil companies today fund their own ‘climate research.’

Marathon Man [Dustin Hoffman, Lawrence Olivier] seems to have been designed for multiple viewings. A character seen briefly in one scene turns up later in the movie. A quick telephone call becomes incredibly important but you have to be paying close attention to every minute.

DagwoodIII@piefed.socialto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How does an average looking guy cold approach a woman?English0·6 days agoIf you want to learn to talk to people, start by talking to old people.
Folks who were around before the internet actually spent a good portion of their lives just making small talk with strangers.
Next, develop some hobbies/pursuits that involve socializing. Adult league sports teams, or volunteer work, or community theater.
DagwoodIII@piefed.socialto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you justify buying something you want but don’t need?English0·6 days agoIf I buy it I’ll forget about it.
If I don’t buy it, I’ll spend the next twenty years thinking about that cool think I didn’t buy when I had the chance.
It was a stupid little statue of a fairy sitting next to a mirror and I still wish I’d brought it.
DagwoodIII@piefed.socialto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your favorite snack to take on road trips?English0·6 days agoAhh, the good old days, when a wife beating drunk was next to Dennis the Menace on every comic page.
USSR imploded with little help from the West.
Brezhnev invaded Afghanistan; Solidarity trade union in Poland was homegrown; Chernobyl wasn’t sabotaged; the old guard who went against Gorbachev hated the West more than anyone.
Read a book called “Stand On Zanzibar” by John Brunner. Written in 1969 and set in the early 21st century.
Scary how much the author got exactly right.
Think of it this way.
The 1950’s was the “Rock and Roll” era.
The 1970’s was ‘Disco.’
The 2000’s were ‘the 2000s’
Bell bottoms and acid washed jeans lasted a few years, and I’ve been seeing guys with their pants below the butt for decades.

One thing I have come to realize is how much of history I learned passively from movies and comic books. The first time I saw Edgar Allan Poe was in an The Atom comic, and Julius Cesar was in a cartoon. Pretty much everyone I knew first hear classical music when they played it behind Bugs Bunny.
These days, there’s a tiny handful of historically based shows and movies compared to earlier times.

I personally like to try things out before I buy. What one person loves may be wrong for someone else.
That’s my take.

I’ve read about a few situations like this. There was a jail break that was meticulously planned but the escapees were quickly caught because they had no idea what to do once they got out of prison. Sometimes people get tunnel vision and lose sight of the bigger picture.

Check out the graphic novel series “The Wicked And The Divine.”
Every year, a dozen young people reincarnate as various gods. They have incredible powers, but know that they will all soon die.

You tend to do what the people around you do. If I’m in a religious person’s home I’m going to act differently than I would in a rowdy bar.
Your wisdom is only overshadowed by your generosity.
