Glad the kid wasn’t killed, but saddened that Kitchener, while possessing some great cycling routes, completely ghosts on infrastructure where it’s needed. If I were that kid, I’d ride on the sidewalk on that kind of street.
Probably WAS using the sidewalk, maybe rode through the crosswalk, and the driver didn’t expect someone there so quickly. Cyclists are injured and die on the sidewalk more frequently than on the road.
Ban cars

I will note that the intersection that this happened at does not have any safe cycling infrastructure. Shame on Kitchener.
