I feel like this would be funny if the text in the top left corner just wasnt there. Like the shrimp just randomly transforms into an arch user for no reason

The US is one of 3 countries on the planet that still stubbornly primarily uses imperial units. “The US doesn’t do it that way” isn’t a great argument for not adopting a standard.

Saying that our only options are to produce stuff or not produce CO2 at a gargantuan scale is a false dichotomy. CO2 production at the scale that it is now is the result of the production processes that result in that CO2 being cheaper than the ones that on the whole, do not. We are flushing this planet down the drain not because we cant do otherwise but because its cheaper right now to do what were doing instead.

And I agree with that. I want a car that has the basics and yeet the touch screens and other garbage no one asked for but it seems theres not really any choice anymore.

Chemist (and biochemist) here. Organometallic compounds of Mercury are primarily dangerous because Mercury ions bond fairly strongly to soft ligands like sulfhydryl groups found near the active sites of enzymes. This can result in the displacement of the metal ions or otherwise disrupt the structure needed for enzyme functionality. Mercury metal OTOH is considerably less reactive. It is not safe to breathe in for prolonged periods of time but it is no where near as toxic as its organometallic derivatives are. Dimethyl Mercury for example, is extremely dangerous. A single drop has 100+ times the organomercury content needed to kill someone.

xkforce@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something that gets a lot of hate for absolutely no reason?0·1 year agoOMFG there is no evil conspiracy by USAA and every other insurance company against pitbulls JFC. Pitbulls are just statistically much more dangerous than other animals.
xkforce@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something that gets a lot of hate for absolutely no reason?0·1 year agoThese are multibillion dollar companies (actually they insure trillions in assets) whose whole job is to be very very good at assessing risk. xkforce@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something that gets a lot of hate for absolutely no reason?0·1 year agoI worked as an insurance agent. In the states I had my P&C licenses in, we were legally required to base rates on data. i.e statistically how much the company paid out in claims given certain factors. One of the things we based rates on was the breeds of dog people owned. Pitbulls and certain other dog breeds do not just have a bad reputation because people irrationally fear/hate them, they actually do pose a greater risk. Just like teenagers by and large, aren’t as safe drivers. It isn’t “fair” in that the dog didn’t choose to be the breed it is and some of them really are good dogs but statistically, averaged over the whole, they are more of a risk than other dog breeds are.

When I was in junior high there was a project that was worth half my grade that was announced on day 1 and due at the end of the semester. I waited until an hour before it was due to start working on it. I got an A. I can only imagine what I could have done if I had worked on it consistently throughout the semester like a normal person.
