Better-compressed in saved Mbytes, but comparing images, that compression somehow looks more…fake. Hard to describe how.

No, no, that’s lemmy users. /s
Also Ford’s CEO: kills sedans in the US several years ago.

I think I used my toaster 7 or 8 years ago?
Sure…but let’s expand. Those trees then become paper towels and such. Processing would need to be done with electric stuff and not petrol based machines. There would be a cost to create said industrial equipment in pollution I’m sure.
Let’s invent new ways to use the wood. It would likely be weak fibers if fast growing so they’d need to be processed and pressed. What is disposable products like paper towels get composted and used for (other vague processes) - any methane generation can be collected for the methane to then be burned (I know, but at least it’s not fossil fuel extraction) for processes that still need burnable fuel.
Any compost that can be used for fertilizing new tree growth goes back into the cycle.
The Plants may still be beneficial to exist, but augment with the plants. Let’s start reforestation? Especially on land with abundant fresh water.
As a side-note, an episode of an old TV show SeaQuest in the 1990s always stuck with me, I think it was the (mediocre) 2035 reboot where there were giant carbon scrubbing towers on the shoreline. It stuck with me way back then and I had hoped we’d never see it. But. Yay, here we are. /s
Lots of holes I’m sure, but, seems worth trying? Not an expert obv.
We’ll take our expensive luxury EVs with 2 miles a charge and like them…er I mean buy giant pickup trucks instead that use 20 gallons of gas / mile while the world burns.
And a new set of dependency problems depending on the base image. And then fighting layers both to optimize size, and with some image hubs, “why won’t it upload that one file change? It’s a different file now! The hashes can’t possibly be the same!” And having to find hackey ways to slap it so the correct files are in the correct places.
Then manipulating multi-arch manifests to work reliably for other devs in a cross-processor environment so they don’t have to know how the sausage works…
So here’s a dumb question. Why don’t we just plant the fastest growing carbon eatingest trees…everywhere. Now? Seems simpler to use a plant instead of a Plant.
Each state is varying levels of stupid. One of the few times where the existence of the Federal government makes sense. They should ban the bans at the Federal level.
So glad my state banned the ability for HOAs to do that.
Oh man, totally. Local HVAC peeps try to claim heat pumps are super expensive and omg stay away…even though it’s just an AC that goes both ways. Probably scared of the cut into their gas furnace maintenance revenue.
The compressors on full house-scale non-split heat pumps are same power draw as AC units, which is many amps more than the peanuts a furnace fan uses, but if OP has an AC unit, the heat pump also replaces it.
I get the complexity though. If I want to upgrade my home to have service for charging electric cars, and all electric heat/cool, the amperage draw is high enough that it would require an upgrade from “consumer”-level to “business”-level power input.
All that money will keep them safe from the mad max, of course. /s
These hedge fund types are near-sighted idiots with horse blinders that can’t see beyond the next quarter.
That worked out great for Apple, Microsoft, and others. Good luck, Amazon.
Embrace their parents’ generation while they are still alive. They are still chock full of wisdom.
I don’t get it. They’re not already?
Win10 gets Copilot as well. Pushed without consent. Likewise if you use a program like InControl to lock W11 to 22H2, you can keep copilot at bay. For a time.
Switching to any other platform is better though. Screw them.
The energy required, despite the quantity of lithium (which wouldn’t be available anyway) would just surge carbon output to later reduce it decades later. We can’t capitalism our way out by making more things. Stopping making everything would actually help more, but would implode the planet’s societies. Throttling energy use by AI and other expensive processes would do more, now. Pushing the use of public infrastructure, even busses, would do more now. Getting people to stop using cars would do more now. Forcing employers to require jobs that don’t need a physical presence to all be work from home would do more now.
Great write-up and great find! You’ll find companies will often try to weasel out of actually honoring ethical programs more than not, but that doesn’t mean give up! If nothing else, the learning will lead to long term education and basically forever employment in various fields.
LLMs are really fucking bad at math. They’re trying to find the statistical close answer, not doing computation. It’s rather mind-numbingly dumb.
