That’s exactly my issue with GIMP. We are all so entitled, even GIMP devs.

You don’t want to include a feature to draw an editable circle/square/polygon? Fine, but then don’t get superdefensive nor “counterattack” when people ask you about this feature. All in all, pretty much every other image manipulation program has it, so it’s understandable people wonder why GIMP doesn’t have it. I for one still can’t wrap my head around why this is a no-no for some people. It doesn’t make any sense.

When I was majoring as graphic designer I used to use GIMP for a bunch of stuff, even played with python-fu and saved me some time I never would have saved with Photoshop or some shit like that, but even back then they always answered to everything some variation of “we are short on resources”. Well at that time Krita (which was even called Kpaint) had even less resources than GIMP and look at them now.

I’m “stuck” with an Apple Thunderbold Display. Can’t deny it’s great, sturdy, integrated mic, camera, usb ports and ethernet are actually a great thing to have and everything in it looks great despite it being “old” - but I have a super annoying issue where at like 70% of the times I turn on the computer the display won’t turn on - I have to restart the PC with the REISUB thing, then turn it on, then press f9/f10 like wanting to go to the boot/bios screen, then turn the PC off, then turn it on again - it’s until that time the display turns on. All I just know about this is that this is most probably due to the Titan Ridge driver in the Thunderbolt adapter my PC has, an HP Elitedesk 800 g4.

So I was looking forward to this and, if they ever have success/luck and I have money, potentially getting a Mac Mini M4 new/second hand to replace the PC. But maybe I should be looking forward to another monitor brand that offers the same features and quality.

I know the Hammerhead Karoo 2 runs Android and would bet something like the one I use, the Wahoo Elmnt Roam 2, does too. Maybe Garmins too.

That being said, with the recent scandal about the Garmin watches I’d think twice before getting a Garmin and for the stuff I’ve seen the new Wahoo Elmnt Ace isn’t worth that much money. The main drawback about the Karoos seem to be their battery life but don’t take my word on that.

There are some other brands as well like Bryton or the new Coros, but I think you should take a peek at those to see if you like them.

All in all I guess almost any “big brand” can offer something you’d like. I ended spending my bucks on a Wahoo because (1) non-touch screen, and well thought hardware (buttons) interaction, which is great for rainy days that here are quite a lot; (2) its simple UI, specifically I love the numbers typeface (yes I know this is ridiculous, but still I find it beautiful and simple to read); (3) gets regular updates and (4) doesn’t involve microtransactions of any kind.

Though I wish in all of that sea of data you can get of them someone offered a field like “you’re in this street, intersection with this other street” to be available in their data screens so no needing to go to a map screen to see where you are at.

You know, besides the funny/cute/interesting videos that made it to its home page that I save to show them to my mother, the only other reason I haven’t deleted Reddit yet is the r/forhire sub.

Of course, not a Linkedin alternative per se, but it seems to me there have been people that has found full time jobs thanks to that sub. I’ve had the chance to get some small gigs and earn some extra bucks working for great people (and being scammed by awful people in other “similar” subs, but that’s another story).

I was bummed when I got here and found out there are some similar communities here but with almost no subscriptors and no posts whatsoever.

Not exactly. Yes a browser engine is one of the most, if not the most, complex pieces of software.

But if it was almost impossible to create a web engine then this, or KDE’s KHTML, or Servo, or NetSurf, or Kraken, or you-name-it wouldn’t exist.

Then how come (one of) the most powerful tech company in the world couldn’t make it, you ask? They already had a “functional” web engine. But what they had from the beginning was absolute shit that did not respect any web standard. And oh boy we people who fought against that shit trying to support it do know. Its baggage was immensely huge and shitty that after a while and the speed Chrome was taking over they found it was easier to yeet it altogether, and I do hope that piece of shit is burning in hell because it made our lifes so miserable.

Note that Opera did the same thing with their web engine - they gave up with it mostly because they found easier to jump in the Blink bandwagon, without realizing they were making Opera just another Chromium skin without much value, contrary to what Presto was.

Kinda what could happen if one day Microsoft decided to try make Windows to be as functional, fast and permissive as Linux.

I really wish we could actually “rename” places as their original indigenous names across all America(s). For example my country had an internal turmoil just to keep the original name of its capital city because we love our native people, and yet we keep the incredibly stupid name of “Land of Colon” (imho most probably the most stupid name of any country, ever) because fuck our native people.

I still remember when c/[email protected] scolded me for saying K-9 and Thunderbird were two different apps.

Haven’t had too much gloves, got a pair of Santini Fjord gloves but turned out to be a bit of an overkill and they leave my hands with a smell worse than my stinky feet (!). Also got a pair of Spiuk Top Ten which do the job but the velcro is quite finicky imho and there is a kind of poliester-y thin layer on top of tome parts of the palm that has started to peel off in a nasty way, but however doesn’t affect in a single bit their functionality.

My father was a farmer for pretty much all of his life (since he could work until he couldn’t) and had a crop of cilantro at one time. I never knew nor heard about somebody saying that cilantro tastes like soap, never even imagined it was a thing. It was only until a few years ago when I started to get my nose into Reddit when I read about people saying that.

You can’t just throw money and devs at it and expect the problem to be solved.

Then nobody will throw money at any project at all, because everything eventually will be solved by “magick”.

Destinating more resources to that quickens and makes better that process, though, incentivating people to work on it and test it.

It seems like you’re thinking about “customization” as “customizable look and feel”, but “desktop customization” goes way beyond than that.

They could hire more engineers, more testing, more QA. Yet they don’t.

No? Okay, but then why do all these foundations/organizations exist? And why do they hold such vast amounts of resources, while extorting the projects they claim to help?

I’d only add that it’s not only about the kernel - they are home to a project that could be in the medium-long term a serious alternative to Google’s blink/Apple’s webkit, and of course an alternative to the hegemony of Chrome, but they actively chose to just not give them a single cent.
