If you don’t know what you most enjoy after H.S., finding your motivation is a really great idea for many kids. if you give it a quarter and still aren’t inspired, outside work could help with that. College is expensive; but it’s worth it and -much- easier once you know why you’re there! You’re story is a perfect example, thanks for sharing.

I’d add this (from my experience): if you start out doing well, but your grades start slipping in the second year? Take a quarter (or a year) off to figure out why that’s happening. Maybe that major isn’t for you after all. Maybe things in your personal life need getting past so that you can can get your focus back. The college will still be there when you’re ready … unless what you need is … another college !!

Totally agreed … IF you plant a tree, and let it grow, then pellitize and transport it in a green way, then burning it won’t release more hydrocarbons than it accumlated.

Fire that consumes hydrocarbon fuels and oxygen liberates CO2. So yeah. Gasoline, diesel, natural gas, wood chips, all hydrocarbon fuels. NO SUCH THING as ‘green’ wood burning.

I think NYT is correct in this sense: I haven’t heard Harris herself say much about ‘climate change’ let alone ‘global warming’.

We all get that. Candidates tend to stay away from talking about stuff that makes people feel bad because it sticks to them. But I’ve not heard her even address expanding renewables as rapidly as possible, or even heat pumps. No doubt that’s the advice she’s getting. One reason is that the cars we’re driving are a major source of CO2. Nobody’s touching that elephant.

Legislators this year already are trying to tackle the rising costs of electricity.

Considering CA’s widespread use of the now-cheapest sources of electricity, it’s more than ironic that costs to consumers are rising. Somebody needs to take a -very close- look at that.

Another question for CA: are data centers required to be carbon-neutral or else ? Will they thriving on the savings created by people driving EVs? Will their demands result in higher prices for everyone?

Because you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time … and they’ve been at it for a very long time.

Reminds me of another India beat-the-heat tech that I read was widespread there for centuries.

Those who’ve ever been in a root cellar or basement are excused. You make a hole in the ground, then go down in it. Underground temperatures world-wide hover around 50-60 degrees all year long.

Make a BIG hole in the ground, and build stairs that people can use to go down into it. Heat rises, so not a problem.

As a very curious person with very wide interests, it is so easy to access really hard-to-find information. In the past five years I’ve satisfied my curiosity more than adequately on hundreds of topics I’d wondered about all my life … from home. One plus side of Covid.

On the darker side, there were plenty of predictions (from science and fiction) in decades past that are becoming very real. Too many heads buried in sand.

In the big, big grocery store I use, there isn’t much choice about plastic. Over (I estimate) 80% of the products (outside of fresh fruits & veggies) either are containerized in plastic, or is boxed or canned food which is wrapped-in plastic (e.g. cereal) and covered with or wrapped-in plastic. We need to see a big turnaround in this situation.

I don’t see much recognition - from manufacturers or consumers - of how many tens of tons of tossed-away plastic are carried out of most of these stores every day. Consumers have few alternatives … no sign that food packagers give a damn … or that stores (most are corporate-owned) are struggling to make wiser choices.

It’s a lot bigger problem than what container we use to carry our purchase to the car.
