Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Do you have a plan for your self-hosted data if you die?English
2·1 day agoI figure by then, it will all be part of some AI training set one day. Hopefully my shitty writing and bad opinions poison the shit out of it.
I’m sure it works great but it’s like curing a toothache by breaking another one out on the other side of your mouth. My problem with windows isn’t how difficult to use it is, it’s how restricted and how connected it must be. I don’t have full control of the system and I’m required to have external accounts for it to work. Same with chrome.
My data is mine, I don’t want it accessed, owned and controlled by a faceless internet corporation.
So, professionally I do not care what system I am expected to use, they are all functional. If the person signing my paycheck is comfortable with it, so be it (in fact, I’m a big proponent of externalizing risk in a corporate setting). Personally though, I’ll keep up my greybeard routine :).

LinkedinLunatics@sh.itjust.works•Can't wait to see how this works out with Finance and HR...English
0·4 days agoYou know what, fine, let’s see how it goes.
Honestly, I’d love more people to disrupt and try shit (that obviously won’t work, but still…). What I hate is that people try this kind of shit but get billions in a16z money which legitimizes the stupidity from the start. Then when they fail, they use the stupid money to convince others that they couldn’t have been the problem, otherwise they wouldn’t have ever “succeeded”.
Then they get another several billion…
This goddamned grifter economy sucks.
I like it, do it! Have you read Altered Carbon? Has some similar themes. I loved the book, might be some good inspiration. I’ll read yours when it’s out, love that genre :).
No idea what to say about this, or what it even is. But I’m sorry to hear it. I had a very similar situation as a kid, multiple divorces, used as a pawn in their fight over money. It’s rough, but I learned from their mistakes and have a strong marriage that works.
Nah, been great, getting married was the smartest thing I’ve ever done.
You think that’s bad, I got married in 2008.
Then again, I’ve done a lot in that time, 3 kids into it, including 2 teenagers…
Big fan. I don’t demand much from a window manager, just stay out of the way. I’ve never really had to give cinnamon any thought, shit just works. I spend most of my time in a terminal window though, so not really pushing the GUI.
This is cursed, unnecessary, unexpected and impressive all at the same time.
he’s got harry potter money, takes roles for the fun of it now…

3·29 days agoI daily drive LMDE with a 4070ti super, works perfect. I do use the proprietary drivers but I hardly ever have issues.

4·29 days agoThats what LMDE is for, Linux Mint Debian Edition. Been my daily driver for years. Otherwise I use vanilla Debian for all my server and headless stuff.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you prefer FOSS over proprietary software? How much do you use it?English
0·1 month ago100%. I try to use open source wherever possible. If it does have to be closed/proprietary, I will only use software I can own, no subscriptions; and the only if I can get them working in Linux (wine has come SO far).
That said, I do still have a windows partition but only for job related stuff.

Linux@programming.dev•Bazzite has seen a massive jolt in growth over the holiday season, surpassing 50k active users. The Fedora Atomic image has gained 38.8k users total in 2025 since it began counting in April 🥳English
11·1 month agoSo far I’m fairly impressed with it. I’ll stick to Debian and LMDE for my purposes, but the family computer got a new life just in time for the RAM and SSD garbage.
OMG, I do this when a drop is about to spill, it’s reflex, Can’t help it. But I’m always terrified someone will see me being so weird.
Glad to know I’m not alone I guess.

0·1 month agounless, I suspect, like me, you have a thick foundation of rock-solid cynicism that the AI simply will never penetrate
Do we know each other or something :).
Honestly great comment, couldn’t agree more.

It is the way.
