The amount of bullshit there is to make things work is… not that bad. When it comes to games, I just can’t. Having to reboot just to fix common FPS issues is too much. I’ve had a bunch of things that require a config change, which then has caused other issues.

The state of Linux Desktop is the best it has ever been and I’ll be back the moment Wayland works better. I love Linux, but for now, it’s not working out for me… Just needed to vent, thanks for reading.

Sure, I can give some pointers. DE is KDE Wayland and the version is whatever Endeavour gives. AMD 7900 GRE and 5800X, no configuration on drivers/proton. There have been weird “seeing through” application epilepsy things to games runnning extremely poorly until the system is restarted.

There are others like shaders/models glitching out where a restart is also necessary, though I can’t confirm if it has been the game or the system itself. Either way, sometimes just restarting the game or changing proton version has fixed them, but they re-appear with different ways to “fix” them in other games. That is, until apt/pacman upgrade which sometimes breaks the fix.

If you’re running the most recent kernel, I’d recommend moving to linux-lts. I have slightly similar specs, KDE Wayland, 6900 xt and 5800, and I had issues with games straight up crashing out my PC on the latest kernel.

Huh, that sounds nasty. Does the flickering stuff happen with specific games or just any game you play? If you haven’t switched back to windows already, do you think you could capture a small clip of this happening with an external device?

I have similar hardware to you. I haven’t seen anything like this with gnome + Wayland but I can try groupinstall KDE on fedora to see if I can hit this too.

Not exactly the same, but here is Firefox doing something similar. The left bar is flickering between desktop wallpaper and the middle bar is a stretch of whatever is on the application and the rest is as it’s supposed to be. It seems to be related to the HZ as my video camera cannot capture the flicker, having an effect like what happens when a spinning blade will look like it’s not moving.

In games it’s usually top right/left square (about 30% width, 20% height) that starts flickering. Either way, there’s no need to take time to find a solution, since I’m already transfering things over. The firefox one to my understanding has been documented and common.

That sounds like changing the main config file instead of a conf.d/ sub config file. I have no clue what the correct naming for this is.
