Dylan Roof was the first person in US history to face the death penalty at federal and state levels. He was sentenced to death for several counts of murder and hate crimes. Following his shooting, South Carolina finally removed the Confederate flag from the state house and removed several Confederate memorials state-wide.

One of the ways to get charged with murder 1 in NY is for terrorism. I don’t even think that’s one of the possible charges in SC. This isn’t the difference you think it is. They threw the book at Roof and even made some long overdue changes in a rare moment of self-reflection.
