    How did it happen?

    How are you currently surviving?

How do you plan to change the situation?

Landlord suddenly raised rent. Dad couldn’t afford the new price. Didn’t have any money saved up cause living pay-check to pay-check. One of my dad’s friends offered a small spare room he has. Put our mattress there, sleeping on it. Dad is currently saving up all the money (his salary comes on 10 and 25 of each month), to start looking for a place to live.

I’m guessing you were renting month to month instead of signing a lease? Under a lease you’re guaranteed the same amount every month until the lease expires.

I’m not sure really, I’m not knowledgeable about that stuff. I wasn’t the one renting… I just know the overall situation.

Yeah, if the rent suddenly went up, you were likely month to month.

It can still go up when a lease expires, but generally you have more notification and the opportunity to negotiate.

It will cost a landlord less to give you a better rate, than clean up and refurbish the unit for a new renter.

I know this is hindsight, but I think you could’ve stayed and make them go through the eviction process to buy some time. Evictions takes a while so that could’ve potentially been enough time to sort things out.

I understand that getting evicted can make it difficult to find a new place though.
