Just because they have natural resources that can be commodified.
I would argue that the economic system wasn’t badly planned but perfectly planned (or evolved). It’s the epitome of an efficient funneling of wealth towards the top in a wormhole-shaped way. It just sucks proportionally downwards in the same way.
